How to study software engineering at Melbourne

You start with an undergraduate degree, where you focus on engineering from day one, while also exploring subjects outside your discipline to develop a breadth of skills that will set you apart in the workplace.

To become a professionally accredited engineer, you complete the Master of Engineering, an internationally recognised qualification.

University of Melbourne pathway

Step 1: Undergraduate study

Start with a Bachelor of Science, majoring in computing and software systems, or Bachelor of Design, majoring in computing.^ (3 years)

Step 2: Graduate study

Complete a Master of Engineering (Software) or Master of Engineering (Software with Business) to become a professionally accredited engineer.** (2 years)

Other undergraduate degree

Step 1: Undergraduate study

Bachelor degree from a recognised tertiary institution (must have completed relevant maths, science and English language requirements). (3 years)

Step 2: Graduate study

Complete a Master of Engineering (Software) or Master of Engineering (Software with Business) to become a professionally accredited engineer. (2–3 years)

The Master of Engineering (Software with Business) is provisionally accredited by Engineers Australia until sufficient students have graduated from the program. Changes to accreditation status will be backdated, so all graduates receive full accreditation when it is granted.
^ Students who complete the Computing major in the Bachelor of Design are eligible for the 237.5 point Master of Engineering (Software) or (Software with Business), which is equivalent to 2.5 years full-time.
