Grants & Scholarships
Many grants and scholarships are is available to help develop female scientists and engineers, often part of industry initiatives to acknowledge women and encourage them to pursue careers in traditionally male-dominated fields.
2008 Google Global Community Scholarship for the Grace Hopper ConferenceThe 2008 Google Global Community Scholarship helps students attend the Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing Conference at the Keystone Resort, Colorado on October 1-4,2008. Conference details can be found at www.gracehopper.org. A group of female students outside of the USA will be chosen from the applicant pool. Google encourages women from throughout the world to apply. Each selected student will receive up to $2,500 USD for airfare, hotel, conference registration and other travel requirements. All applications must be submitted by June 15, 2008
Google Australia Anita Borg Memorial ScholarshipThe 2008 Google Australia Anita Borg Memorial Scholarship encourages women to excel in computing and technology and become active role models and leaders. Scholarships will be awarded based on the strength of candidates' academic background and demonstrated leadership. A group of female undergraduate and graduate student finalists will be chosen from the applicant pool. The scholarship recipients will each receive a $5,000 scholarship for the 2009 academic year and an expenses paid trip to the 2009 Grace Hopper Conference in the United States. The remaining finalists will receive $1,000 each. Online applications will open in April 2008. For more information about the scholarship visit: www.google.com.au/intl/en/anitaborg APESMA Career & Family ScholarshipTo assist the careers of professionals whose family responsibilities have impacted upon their career. Preference is given to applicants who can demonstrate an adverse career impact arising directly from family responsibilities. Many professionals face difficulties in balancing their commitments to work and family. Given the current shortage of professionals in APESMA's target professions, this scholarship promotes members staying in employing and in their chosen professions. Applications for the annual APESMA Career & Family Scholarship will open in late 2008.
Women in Science, Engineering, Technology and Construction ScholarshipThis scholarship from the Department of Infrastructure encourages women to develop their management skills and further their qualifications in these sectors. Women who are part-time or full-time students or are starting or completing a Masters, PhD or other postgraduate degrees are eligible to apply. The Zonta International Amelia Earhart FellowshipsThese Fellowships were established in 1938 in honour of Amelia Earhart, famed pilot and member of The Zonta Clubs in the United States. The Fellowships are made annually to women pursuing graduate PhD/doctoral degrees in aerospace-related sciences and engineering. Applications for 2009 Amelia Earhart Fellowships are expected to open in late 2008. Application forms are available on the Amelia Earhart Fellowship Program webpage. The Sir Robert Menzies Memorial Scholarship in EngineeringThis scholarship is offered to one Australian post-graduate in engineering for tenure at universities in the United Kingdom for either one, two or three academic years. It includes return fares and substantial allowances which are not subject to UK income tax. Academic excellence is of primary importance. The Menzies Foundation selection committee seeks individuals who are likely to attain prominence in Australia as demonstrated by their record of leadership, extra-curricular activities and interest in the service of others.
