Transition: student clubs & societies

A range of student clubs and societies exist within the Faculty of Engineering to enhance your campus experience and connect you with other engineering students with similar interests or backgrounds.

You should also think about joining special interest groups and support groups within the Student Union and Melbourne University Sport.

Engineers Without Borders (University of Melbourne chapter)

EWB Melbourne University has members from all engineering disciplines across the all departments at the university. Through educational seminars, social events and community projects, we aim to give these students, and the broader university community, an opportunity to learn about and participate in sustainable development projects. Through outreach events we also hope to reach the wider Australian community and in particular school students, to promote a more positive view of engineering and the enormous potential of the field to benefit disadvantaged communities.

International Engineering Students' Society (IESS)

The International Engineering Student Society (IESS) is a Faculty-based society aimed at broadening student outlooks and heightening respect for cultural diversity in the faculty of engineering. All year round, we reach out to our members through a smorgasbord of academic and social activities.

Activities and programs organised by IESS:

IESS Mentor Scheme

The Mentor Scheme is a support network for international students. During orientation, new international students will have the opportunity to interact with mentors, who are likely to be later year engineering students. These mentors will organise activities to help students make new friends and widen their social network.

Mentors will also aid students with the transition to living and studying in Australia.

Trips

At least twice every semester, the IESS activity officer organises exciting trips to scenic destinations such as the Mornington Peninsula and Lake Entrance.

Lunch Gatherings

The free lunch gatherings on campus are initiatives to provide all members with the opportunity to mingle and keep in contact with one another in a comfortable social setting. Guest speakers are also sometimes invited to speak.

And more:

IESS has hosted exchange students during their visit to the University of Melbourne. Students were shown the various tourist attractions around Melbourne, and taken on industrial visits related to their engineering field.

At the start of every semester, the IESS also organises a book swap for the convenience of all engineering students.

Melbourne University Young Engineers (MUYE)

MUYE was formed in 1988 as a student chapter of the 'The Institute of Engineers Australia' (IEAust), and is run by an elected student committee. MUYE is the only student club or organisation dedicated to providing ALL Engineering students with links to industry and professional development through the many events and activities it runs during the year. These events and ctivities include:

  • industry night
  • industry site visits
  • public speaking competitions
  • mock interviews
  • vacation work information sessions
  • BBQ
  • trivia nights

All MUYE events are open to all Engineering students of all levels. By participating in MUYE, you will have fun, meet new people and form new friendships, while gaining important links to industry.

If you are interested in participating or being involved in the organisation of any of these events, please contact us. We would be delighted to hear from you!
