housed by the Ian Potter Museum of Art, second only to the
National Gallery of Victoria. The gallery is free of charge,
open six days a week and is there for the use of all staff and students
as well as the general public.

textbooks and additional reading material
It is best to wait and check with your lecturers before buying any books.
Lecturers usually inform students about recommended textbooks and additional
reading materials in the first lecture.
engineering library
Most recommended textbooks are available for reference or loan in the
Engineering Library. Many recommended textbooks are placed on reserve.
These high-use books that can be requested at the circulation desk; they
can be used in the library for as long as you like, or borrowed for a
2-hour period if you need to take them to the lab, for example. Other
copies of high-use textbooks can be borrowed overnight or for seven days
in some cases. High-use textbooks not placed on reserve or subject to
limited loan periods can generally be borrowed for up to 28 days. Books
available on 7-day or 28-day loan can be renewed up to four times for
the same period if they have not been requested by another user.

The University Bookshop is located at the northern end of
the Baillieu Library Building (ground floor) is open seven days
a week. Check the website below for opening times.
In addition
to academic texts, the bookshop also sells a wide of general books,
course notes, stationery and other equipment (for example, lab coats,
safety glasses, computer supplies, medical equipment etc). Students
are eligible for a 17% discount on most new texts and the store buys
and sells a limited number of used textbooks.

Second hand books can be bought at bargain prices. Look out for advertisements
on notice boards around campus, mainly in the Old Engineering building,
your home department and Union House.

DELA is a Diagnostic English Language Assessment test
aimed at international students and local students who speak English as

English language skills classes for Engineering students: Effective Communications
for Engineering and Advanced ESL Information Technology Two
advanced ESL classes are also offered: Advanced ESL 1 (AESL1) and Advanced

This card is available to Australian citizens who qualify as low-income
earners. The card entitles you to pharmaceutical benefits as
well as concessions on water and power bills. Application forms are available

Students can purchase a newspaper card at very
low cost at the beginning of the semester. The card entitles
you to collect your newspaper from selected stores at no extra charge:

Stalls will be set up in front of Union House at the beginning of semester
1 where you can purchase your newspaper card.
parking
If you wish to park on campus after 5 pm, you will need to obtain
an after hour permit for use on Central Campus.
Parking at Central Campus, Eastern Precinct and Western Precinct is
not available to students during the day. It is possible
to park at University
Square during the day, however, at a cost of $7.50.

photocopying
A photocopy card is required to use most of the photocopiers on
campus. These can be purchased and recharged from machines in
the libraries. They cost $2 and include $1 of photocopying credit. The
same card may be used for printing in the Percy Baxter Collaborative Learning
Centre and the Student IT labs. Double-sided printing is available on
most photocopiers and will save both money and paper.

public transport
Melbourne University is located a short distance from the Melbourne
Central Business District (CBD). Trams frequently travel
along the short 10 minute route towards the University from
the CBD along either Swanston Street or Royal Parade.
buying tickets
The University is located in Zone 1 and passengers are required to purchase
and validate their ticket while traveling on the tram. It is best to pre-purchase
your tickets either at a train station, newsagent or stores that sell
public transport tickets, as ticket inspectors frequently inspect
trams for valid tickets. Pre-purchasing can also help you to
save money, as 10 trip tickets work out cheaper than 10 individual trips.
Ticket inspectors have the right to fine passengers that have an incorrect
or invalid ticket. Fines are currently around $150. If you have not pre-purchased
a ticket, make sure that you have change with you as ticket machines do
not accept notes.
concession cards
As a university student, you have the option to purchase a Tertiary
Student Concession Card. Carry the concession card with you
whenever you are using public transport with a concession ticket, as
ticket inspectors have the right to fine you if you purchase a concession
ticket but do not have a concession card.
Unfortunately, international students are not entitled to purchase
a Tertiary Student Concession Card.

Campus Watch (Security) has been set up to promote
personal safety and prevent theft on campus. Any suspicious behaviour
can be reported to the Campus Watch office.
At night, a security escort service is available by
arrangement to accompany you from campus buildings to the closest local
public transport.

A wide range of short courses are offered by the Melbourne
University Student Union (MUSU) and the Melbourne
University Sports Association (MUSA) every semester. Class
sizes are generally small and they are a great way of meeting new people,
learning new skills, and sharing new experiences. Courses on offer include:

youth allowance
Youth Allowance is a government allowance for eligible full-time
students. To find out if you are eligible, or how you may become
eligible to receive Youth Allowance contact Centrelink or view their website.
If you are already receiving Youth Allowance, there is a part-time Centrelink
office on campus in the Baldwin Spencer Building to assist with
queries and the lodgement of fortnightly forms. The closest Centrelink
