Scholarships for New Engineering Students

Paterson Scholarship

The Paterson scholarship is open to Australian citizens, who are enrolled in the first year of the Bachelor of Environments, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Biomedicine, or the Bachelor of Commerce, and are undertaking an engineering major or breadth sequence, leading to the Master of Engineering. Applicants must state that they wish to pursue a career in engineering in their application.

Students are required to meet two or more of the following criteria in order of priority:

  1. Financial need — as determined by information provided by the applicant
  2. Disadvantage — as defined by the University’s Access Melbourne Scheme
  3. Academic merit — as determined by the student’s results in the final year of secondary school.

The scholarship is awarded annually and valued at approximately $4,000 per year for the duration of the undergraduate degree and subsequent Master of Engineering in which the recipient may enrol. The Master of Engineering must be taken immediately after completion of the recipient’s undergraduate degree.

2012 applications have now closed.

Bob and Helen Paterson

Bob and Helen PatersonBob Paterson BE (Civil) and his wife, Helen, established scholarships to provide significant ongoing support to engineering students who are in financial need or otherwise disadvantaged and have demonstrated academic merit in year 12 of secondary education.

Helen and I were encouraged to establish a scholarship program after the experience of a distant relative who received financial support to complete his studies as an adult. He was able to achieve his dream of becoming an engineer. It highlighted to us that there are many students who have the potential to be talented engineers but lack the financial resources and/or family support to continue their education. We hope that through this scholarship we can help some of those students fulfil their potential.
