Scholarships for New Engineering Students

Thanks to the generous contributions of our donors, the Melbourne School of Engineering has launched a major new scholarship program for the Master of Engineering.

Note: Students currently holding an Engineering scholarship up to the total value of $10,000 or more will not be considered.

Master of Engineering Merit Scholarships

We award up a number of scholarships to local and international students enrolling in the Master of Engineering. Scholarships are offered in two rounds each year, for Semester 1 and Semester 2 commencements. Scholarships will be awarded to international and local students and are based on academic achievement in the undergraduate degree. All students who submit a timely application are automatically considered.

International Students

The School awards a number of scholarships to international students enrolling in the Master of Engineering. The scholarships are paid as a $20,000 bursary over two years (2 equal instalments of $10,000) and a $10,000 tuition fee remission awarded over two years (students are given a $5,000 tuition fee remission over two years). All international students who submit a timely application and receive an unconditional offer will be considered for the scholarship which is awarded on academic merit.

Local Students

The School awards a number of scholarships to local students enrolling in the Master of Engineering. The scholarships are paid as a $10,000 bursary over two years (2 equal instalments of $5,000). All local students who submit a timely application and receive an unconditional offer will be considered for the scholarship which is awarded on academic merit.

Master of Engineering Access Scholarships

Access scholarships of $10,000, paid over two years in $5,000 installments, will be awarded to local Master of Engineering applicants who have experienced significant disadvantage during their education, or who are members of a group under-represented in higher education in engineering. Women are a priority group for access scholarships as they are under-represented in engineering in higher education as well as in the profession.

Access Categories

The categories for the scholarships are below:

  • Women in engineering (all female Master of Engineering applicants are automatically considered)
  • Indigenous Australians
  • Previous status as a refugee or holder of a current humanitarian visa
  • Rural or isolated background
  • Disadvantaged socio-economic circumstances
  • Disability or chronic medical condition
  • Personal difficulties

How to Apply

  • Only local students are eligible for the Master of Engineering Access Scholarships.
  • Students who think they meet any of the Access Categories (listed above) need to download and complete the Graduate Access Melbourne Form by the timely application deadline.
  • All female applicants are automatically considered for the Master of Engineering Access Scholarships. If you are a female and meet more than one category as listed above, then you should also complete the Graduate Access Melbourne Form detailing how you meet the other category, (for example, Personal Difficulties or Disability).

Graduate Access Melbourne — available in all programs

In addition to the School’s Master of Engineering Scholarships, the University of Melbourne’s Graduate Access Program is for local students and provides an opportunity for applicants whose personal circumstances have had an adverse effect on their achievement at undergraduate level or who are from an under-represented group in higher education to be considered for entry into the University’s Graduate Programs. Graduate Access is available in all of the School’s Masters courses, both professional and specialised.

There are three main benefits to the Graduate Access Program:

  1. Students may gain access to a program when their results are slightly below those required for entry — as circumstances affecting academic achievement will be taken into consideration.
  2. Students may gain a CSP in a program instead of an Australian Fee place — greatly reducing the cost of study.
  3. Students may be considered for a one-off payment of $5000.

Visit the Graduate Access Melbourne website for more details.

JH Mirams Scholarships — Specialised Masters Programs

The School awards $5,000 one-off scholarships to high achieving students who have applied for our specialised masters. (Excludes the professional Master of Engineering, the Master of Spatial Information Science and Master of Information Technology.) All international and local applicants who have submitted a timely application and received an unconditional offer will be considered. The scholarship is awarded solely on academic merit from a previous degree(s).

Asian Development Bank Scholarships

Asian Development Bank Scholarships cover tuition fees and provide a living allowance for graduate engineering students from Asian Development Bank developing member countries.

Visit the Melbourne Scholarships Office for more information.

Scholarships for Current Engineering Students

Once enrolled as in graduate Engineering, students become eligible for the following Engineering scholarships that are provided by industry partners and private bequests:

Aileen Sinclair Memorial Scholarship

Eligibility: First and second year Master of Engineering students

The family of the late Ms Aileen Sinclair has endowed to the University of Melbourne a scholarship to be awarded to a student enrolled in the Faculty of Engineering. Ms Sinclair died tragically in December 2000. Her family have established this scholarship to continue the support she gave to the students during her time in the Faculty.

The scholarship is open to students enrolled in their first or second year of the Master of Engineering professional program within the Melbourne School of Engineering. Applicants must be Australian citizens or permanent residents deemed to have financial need and who have experienced disadvantage:

  • Hardship caused by socio-economic circumstances
  • Completed school in a rural or isolated area
  • Disability or long-term medical condition
  • From an under-represented school
  • Non-English speaking background
  • Recognition as an Indigenous Australian
  • Difficult family circumstances

Information on the categories of disadvantages can be found on the University of Melbourne’s Scholarships Office. Academic ability will also be taken into consideration during the selection process.

FEE-HELP

FEE-HELP is an Australian Government loan scheme that helps eligible students who enrol in an Australian fee place (full time or part time) to pay tuition fees for graduate study. FEE-HELP can cover all or part of your tuition fees. The Australian Government pays the amount of the loan directly to the University. You then repay your loan through the Australian taxation system when your income is above the minimum repayment threshold.
