Master of Engineering (Geomatics)

This program explores the science and technology of measurement, mapping and visualisation, such as satellite and photographic image processing, 3D computer visualisations and global positioning systems.

The Master of Engineering (Geomatics) is designed to provide students with a formal qualification in engineering and/or surveying at the masters level. Geomatic engineers study the science and technology of measurement, mapping and visualisation. They work on satellite and photographic image processing, three dimensional computer visualisations and global positioning systems. This program emphasises team-based project work, problem-solving and industry interaction, and internship opportunities are available to students with selected firms and government departments. The program is accredited by the Surveyors Registration Board of Victoria, as well as provisionally accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors and Engineers Australia; full accreditation will be granted when the first cohort of students graduate.

Career Outcomes

There is a growing demand for people with expertise in spatial information, along with a current labour shortage in Australia, ensuring graduates of a range of well-paid employment opportunities. Geomatic engineers work in a variety of technical settings from software companies to providing satellite information for government and industry in a range of roles relating to land and surveying, in environmental remote sensing, and in firms specialising in land and resource management, mapping, three dimensional visualisation and spatial data infrastructure. The mix of practical skills and highly sought after technical knowledge allows graduates to prepare for careers in land and/or asset management for government, banks or property firms, or as surveyors in mining, construction and land agencies. Other applications for spatial information may include: disaster and resource management; intelligent transport systems; architecture and urban planning; food production; health and environmental modeling, to name a few. Our recent graduates have been employed by organisations such as Yarra Water, The Office of the Surveyor-General, Reeds Consulting and Geoscience Australia.

Dual accreditation with Engineers Australia (provisional) and EUR-ACE® allows graduates of the Master of Engineering, or the Master of Spatial Information Science, to practice as professional engineers virtually anywhere in the world. For more information see our accreditation page.

Credit for Prior Studies

The Master of Engineering is a 300 point or 3 year program. The first 100 points (1 year) is made up of foundation study tailored to students from non-engineering backgrounds. Many students who enter the program will have some prior study in engineering, which will allow them to receive credit for up to the first year of the program, reducing the program to 2 years.

Students who have studied at an institution other than the University of Melbourne must supply engineering syllabus item details from their previous institution of study, along with an original or certified copy of their academic transcript, to enable credit to be assessed at the time of application.

Allison Kealy

Dr Allison Kealy

Dr Allison Kealy is the Program Coordinator of the Master of Engineering (Geomatics) program. Dr Allison Kealy is a senior lecturer in the Department of Infrastructure Engineering. Her key areas of research interest include: improving the performance of satellite positioning and navigation systems (like GPS); sensor fusion for position determination in all environments; wireless sensor networks for environmental monitoring; techniques for describing the quality of positioning information; and using measurements from satellite positioning systems to improve weather forecasting models.

The Master of Engineering (Geomatics) is an accredited program that provides professional skills in all areas from spatial data acquisition through to the generation of spatial products and services. It has a strong focus of measurement science (land surveying) and provides the essential subjects necessary for becoming a licensed land surveyor. A graduate from this degree program will become part of a specialised industry in which there are plenty of opportunities for well-paid work, travel and flexible working environments. For me it is the innovative job opportunities, nontraditional working environments and overall job satisfaction derived from working in an industry that makes a real contribution to improving systems and services for society that makes geomatics fascinating.
