How to Apply (International Graduate Coursework Students)
When can I apply?
You can apply for a future intake at any time prior to the application closing dates, even if you have not received your final results and/or completion statements provided you supply a copy of your results to date.
The School of Engineering provides conditional offers to applicants who meet the eligibility criteria and can re-assess your application once you submit your final results or other required documentation and provided all conditions are met can then issue an unconditional offer.
Conditional offers are normally provided within four weeks of receipt of application, provided all the required documentation is submitted. (This may be longer during peak periods of October–December & May–June). Conditional offers are valid until three weeks prior to orientation starts.
What are the application closing dates?
Semester 2, 2012
- One round only:
- 30 April, 2012 (timely applications)
- Applications received by the closing date will have an increased chance of access to available scholarships. Scholarship outcomes will be sent by the first week of June 2012.
- Applications may still be submitted after 30 April 2012 however, these applications are not likely to be considered for scholarships and delays may be experienced in processing applications received after this date. Applicants should consider the impact this will have on obtaining visas and making arrangements as applications received after this date will not be prioritised.
Semester 1, 2013
- One round only:
- 31 October, 2012 (timely applications)
- Applicants for the 3-year Master of Engineering (Electrical) and Master of Engineering (Mechanical) will have a summer start and must apply by 31 October 2012.
- Applications received by the closing date will have an increased chance of access to available scholarships. Scholarship outcomes will be sent by mid-January 2013.
- Applications may still be submitted after 31 October 2012 however, these applications are not likely to be considered for scholarships and delays may be experienced in processing applications received after this date. Applicants should consider the impact this will have on obtaining visas and making arrangements as applications received after this date will not be prioritised.

Can I get credit for previous study?
Master of Engineering
It is possible to obtain up to 100 points (8 subjects) of credit for previous relevant study, usually for subjects in the first year of the program as these are foundation subjects.
Credit is only awarded for study undertaken in the last ten years and is assessed by the program coordinator.
To be assessed for credit, all applications for the Master of Engineering from applicants whose studies were outside of the University of Melbourne must include a course syllabus, or subject outline/description, of the previous study. A separate form is not required to be completed.
Students must also provide subject outlines of any tertiary level maths and science subjects for subject pre-requisite assessment if taken outside the University of Melbourne.
The syllabus/course outline should include details of the content covered and assessments that were required to be submitted.
Master of Energy Systems
Credit may be awarded for relevant prior study and/or for at least 2 years of documented relevant work experience, but no more than 50 points (up to 4 subjects) of credit may be awarded. To apply for credit you must complete the form below and submit it with your course application.

Master of Information Technology
It is possible to obtain credit for previous relevant study for the Master of Information Technology. If you wish to apply for credit, you must see the academic coordinator once you arrive at the University. Please ensure you bring a syllabus or subject outline and a copy of your transcript from your previous course.
There is no additional form that is required to be completed.
Specialised Masters Programs
In general it is not possible to obtain credit for subjects in the specialised masters programs.
What documentation do I need to submit with my application?
The School of Engineering is unable to assess your application until all the required documentation has been received.
Syllabus Details
All applicants for the Professional Master of Engineering will be assessed for credit (advanced standing) at the time of application. You will need to provide syllabus details for any subjects you have completed from your previous institution of study to enable credit to be assessed.
Please note you are also required to supply syllabus details for all technical subjects, for example, tertiary level mathematics, science, engineering or technology subjects.
University of Melbourne students do not need to submit a copy of their syllabus.
Applicants for the Specialists Masters programs do not need to supply a syllabus, in general credit is not awarded for Specialist Masters programs.
Applicants for the Master of Energy Systems programs can apply for credit but must complete the prescribed application form specifically for this program. This can be accessed via the Master of Energy Systems page.
Certified Copies of Academic Results
University of Melbourne students do not need to submit a copy of their results as these will be accessed from the University’s database but please ensure that you do include your student ID in your application.
Non-University of Melbourne students must submit certified copies of their results together with a grading scale used by the University where you completed your undergraduate degree. Certified copies must also be sent in hard copy. Academic transcripts must indicate which subjects were taken in which year and in which semester.

Non-University of Melbourne students must submit a certified copy of their Certificate of Completion of their undergraduate degree
There is an option to submit ‘non-certified’ copies of academic results/certificate of completion to enable assessment of your application however hard copy versions of the certified copies must follow.
Master of Energy Systems
A CV must be submitted with all applications for the Master of Energy Systems. Applications without a CV will result in delays in processing.
What if I submit multiple course preferences?
Applicants who submit multiple preferences will be assessed in the order of preference. The School of Engineering will assess the first two preferences and will only assess additional preferences if you are rejected on one of the previous two
Additional preferences will not be assessed if you are successful on your first two preferences.

Applications without the correct documentation will not be assessed. To ensure there are no delays with the processing of your application please make sure you meet the admission requirements and provide the correct documentation.
How long will take for my application to be assessed?
The University of Melbourne endeavours to provide an application outcome within 4 weeks of receipt of a completed application, provided it is submitted correctly.
What happens to my application after I apply?
Once you have submitted your online application, you will receive an acknowledgement email from the University.
If you submitted a hardcopy application, you will receive an email acknowledging receipt of your application within 3 days of receipt from the International Office, International Admissions.
If you qualify based on the information received and your application has all the necessary documentation, you may receive an offer within 4 weeks of receipt of your application.
What if I want to change my course preference or order of preferences?
You are able to change your course preference at any time prior to accepting your offer.
If you wish to change your order of preference once an offer has already been made to you, you must notify the International Admissions office as soon as possible, to allow for processing time and visa delays.

Can I defer an offer?
If you wish to defer your offer please complete the Application to Defer Form.
Please note that if you defer you will be bound by the fees and fee policy applicable to the year in which you commence study, which may be different to the fees and policy enclosed in your original offer package.
Please also note that in accordance with the regulations of this University, you are not permitted to undertake another tertiary course whilst on deferral from the University of Melbourne.
