200 point program
2 years full-time / part-time unavailable
To be considered for entry to the MPhil or PhD you must demonstrate that you meet the following criteria:
You are normally required to have completed at least a four-year honours undergraduate degree.
Not all international undergraduate degrees are considered equivalent to an Australian four-year honours undergraduate degree. Our Research Higher Degree Committee uses Australian Government Country Education Profiles to determine equivalency.
As a general guideline, if your qualification leads directly to admission to research in your home country then your qualification will most likely be eligible for Graduate Research at The University of Melbourne.
Minimum level of academic achievement
You are normally required to have achieved an overall H1 (80–100%) grade in your undergraduate degree or your Masters degree, or be in the top 5% of your graduating cohort.
Relevance of the degree
Your completed degree must be in an area that is relevant to the intended graduate research program, including sufficient specialisation such that you will have already developed an understanding and appreciation of a body of knowledge relevant to your intended MPhil.
Evidence of research ability
You are normally required to have completed a research project, component, subject, or group of subjects that accounts for at least 25% of one year’s work at Honours level, or 25% of one year accumulated over the length of a Masters course, and which has, or have, been conducted, and assessed, individually. Research carried out in groups should at least have been graded individually.
Currency of applicant’s knowledge of the discipline
Your degree(s) and/or professional experience must demonstrate that your knowledge of the discipline in which you plan to undertake your graduate research program is current.
Assessment of level of suitability
Your level of understanding, motivation and time commitment will be assessed based on an interview (or other verbal communication), regarding your suitability for the proposed research program. For example, as a full-time student you would be expected to devote at least 40 hours a week to your research program. During an interview you would need to provide assurance of this level of commitment to your chosen degree.
English language requirements
Applicants must meet the University of Melbourne’s English language entry requirements.
