Aileen Sinclair Memorial Scholarship

The family of the late Ms Aileen Sinclair has endowed to the University of Melbourne a scholarship to be awarded to a student enrolled in the Faculty of Engineering. Ms Sinclair was a much loved staff member of the Engineering Faculty Office, and later the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, having worked within the Faculty for eight years. Ms Sinclair died tragically in December 2000. Her family have established this scholarship to continue the support she gave to the students during her time in the Faculty.

The scholarship is open to students enrolled in their first or second year of a degree within the Faculty of Engineering.  Applicants must be Australian citizens or permanent residents deemed to have financial need and who have experienced disadvantage:

  • Hardship caused by socio-economic circumstances
  • Completed school in a rural or isolated area                  
  • Disability or long-term medical condition
  • From an under-represented school
  • Non-English speaking background
  • Recognition as an Indigenous Australian
  • Difficult family circumstances

Alcoa Future Leaders of Industry Engineering Scholarship (2008)

The Alcoa Future Leaders of Industry Engineering Scholarship is for students entering their 3rd year (single degree)/4th year (combined degree) in 2008, within the Electrical (Power/Control) and Process (Metallurgy) disciplines.

What: $7,000 scholarship award plus 12-week paid work placement at one of Alcoa's Victorian operations

Arno Herpe Scholarships

Applications are invited for the Arno Herpe Memorial Foundation Scholarships.

The Truganini Scholarships Committee has a wide discretion to award financial payments to assist and encourage both undergraduate and postgraduate full-time students who wish to study at the University of Melbourne, and who are able to satisfy the Committee that they are descendent from Indigenous Peoples of the South Pacific area (including Australia and New Zealand).

Preference will be given to Engineering students but all eligible undergraduate and postgraduate students are encouraged to apply. 

Selection will be based on financial need and academic merit.

Australian Building Codes Board (ABCB) Research Scholarship

The scholarship has been established to encourage undergraduate and postgraduate research in the field of building regulations in Australia. The scholarship is available for students undertaking study in the field of Built Environment or Engineering at an educational institution. The scholarship is valued at $2,000 for one year.

Australian Federation of University Women (AFUW) Scholarship Program 2008

The scholarships listed below are offered only to female students who are enrolled at Victorian universities, or at the Victorian campuses of the Australian Catholic University.  Applicants are asked to demonstrate that they are or have been experiencing disadvantage in the pursuit of their studies.

  • E D Daniels Scholarship $3000 and two Bursaries $1500 each for female students enrolled in 2008 in an honours year of an undergraduate degree. 
  • Madeleine Capicchiano Scholarship $3000 for a female student enrolled in an honours year of an undergraduate degree who is conducting research human rights and/or social justice issues at the local, national or international level.
  • Indigenous Scholarship $2000 for a female indigenous student resident in Victoria enrolled in 2008 in an undergraduate degree course at a Victorian university.

Australian Petroleum Production & Exploration Association (APPEA)

Tony Noon Memorial Fund

The Australian Petroleum Production & Exploration Association (APPEA) invites applications from honours students from an Australian university for the award of a one-off grant to a maximum value of $3000. Applicants must be attending the university in the year of application.

The purpose of the fund is to help students aspiring to, or considering, a career in the petroleum exploration and production industry in any discipline directly related to the industry.  This could include, but is not restricted to, exploration, safety, engineering, environment, and economic or legal areas.

The fund has been established in memory of Tony Noon who made an outstanding contribution to the petroleum industry through his work with the Queensland Department of Mines and Energy and later as a member of the APPEA staff.

Australasian Hydrographic Society Education Award

Each year the Australasian Hydrographic Society offers an Education Award of AUD$2,500.

The award is open to students studying, or proposing to study, within a broad range of maritime, surveying and engineering disciplines including, but not necessarily limited to, the following:

The Bilfinger Berger Services Scholarship for Tomorrow's Engineering Leaders

Bilfinger Berger Services first established the Scholarship for Tomorrow's Engineering Leaders in 2006, providing an outstanding student in mechanical or electrical engineering with support throughout their final year.  The scholarship comprises $5,000 (paid in two instalments), 12 weeks paid vacation work (during summer '08-'09) and a mentor throughout their final year.  It is a condition of the scholarship that recipients maintain a credit average throughout their final year and are not in receipt of another industry sponsored scholarship. 

The 2008 Bilfinger Berger Services Scholarship is now open for application by any full-time student in the penultimate year of a single or combined Engineering degree, majoring in mechanical or electrical engineering and reasonably expecting to complete their degree by the end of 2009.  Applicants must be Australian citizens or Permanent Residents.

Applications will be short-listed by the Faculty of Engineering.  Representatives from Bilfinger Berger Services and the Faculty will select the successful applicant through the written applications and interviews.  Applications will be judged on the following selection criteria:

  • Academic merit
  • Demonstrated interpersonal & communication skills
  • Proven initiative
  • Extra-curricular leadership activities

The Bill Meinhardt Memorial Scholarship

The scholarship is named in memory of Mr Bill Meinhardt, founder of Meinhardt Consulting Engineers. Mr Meinhardt was an alumnus of the University of Melbourne, completing his Bachelor of Engineering (CivEng) in 1951. Mr Meinhardt passed away in November 2003.

One scholarship, to the value of $10,000 is available to students completing the penultimate year of a single or combined Bachelor of Engineering degree in the disciplines of civil, environmental, electrical and mechanical engineering.

Applications will be assessed on the following selection criteria:

  • Academic ability
  • Demonstrated leadership skills
  • Demonstrated initiative
  • Demonstrated experience working in a team

Boston Consulting Group (BCG)

The Boston Consulting Group (BCG) is currently accepting applications for its Australian and New Zealand Undergraduate Scholarship. The scholarship is worth $10,000 and is designed to assist students as they plan their final year of study. The scholarship is open to undergraduate students from all academic fields who are Australian or New Zealand permanent residents and are in their penultimate year of University. Students who already hold other scholarships or intend to undertake a summer internship are eligible and are encouraged to apply.

The winner of BCG's Undergraduate Scholarship will demonstrate exceptional ability in the following five areas:

  • Academics: top 5% of their class
  • Leadership: in an extra-curricular or professional capacity
  • Creativity: the ability and desire to seek and create new solutions to any problem
  • Teamwork: be able to work well in a team environment
  • Communication: the ability to relate to a wide range of people in diverse environments

The David Kenworthy Memorial Scholarship

The David Kenworthy memorial Scholarship will be awarded for the seventh time in 2008. The award has been kindly donated by Mrs Christine Kenworthy in memory of her late husband and is valued at $5,000 per annum for 2 years.

The Scholarship is available to students enrolled in the Bachelor of Engineering (Chemical) single degree or in combination with any other degree. Students must be in the 3rd year of a single degree or 4th of a combined and have completed 200 level units in the Bachelor of Engineering (Chemical). Students need to have completed the following subjects to be eligible for consideration:

  • 411-201 Introduction to Transport Process
  • 411-203 Fluid Mechanics
  • 411-204 Chemical Engineering Thermodynamics

The Scholarship will be awarded to a student living away from home on the basis of academic merit and financial need.  The Scholarship will be awarded on the recommendation of a Committee consisting of the Head of Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, a member of Academic staff and a representative from the Melbourne School of Engineering. The Scholarship is tenable for the final 2 years of the course, subject to satisfactory academic performance.

The David Thompson Scholarship

This scholarship (generally in the range of $200 to $1000 per year) is made available each year from Trust Funds. These funds have been established through generous donations to assist students in financial need. Any currently enrolled University of Melbourne Engineering student who can demonstrate financial need can apply.

Defence Engineering Scholarship

Defence offers one scholarship per year to the value of $18,000 to be awarded for up to three years to a civil engineering student.

The award is open to all students who are Australian citizens, and who have completed their first year of study and are now undertaking their second year of an engineering degree, majoring in civil engineering.

The program includes $9,000 per semester of study, and an annual work placement within Defence for 12 weeks each year.

All applications will be short listed by university staff, prior to proceeding to an interview with Defence and university staff.

Students will be selected according to the following criteria:

  • Academic merit, based on performance during first year of study
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills, leadership qualities, communication skills, creativity, innovation and self-motivation
  • Demonstrated achievements in non-academic ventures

The Elene & David Wood & MUEF Chemical Engineering Scholarship

The Elene & David Wood & MUEF Chemical Engineering Scholarship has been established to enable a student coming from a disadvantaged background to undertake the final year program without the need to obtain employment, which is likely to put the study program at risk. The scholarship supported final year will enable the student to succeed with his or her degree and achieve the best possible result.  

One or two scholarships are available each year with a total of $12,000 available for allocation. The student will also be provided with a mentor from the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering throughout their final year. 

To be eligible to apply, students must be in the penultimate year of the Bachelor of Engineering, taught predominantly through the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering and must be able to demonstrate disadvantage experienced prior to or during their study. 

They must reasonably expect to complete their degree at the end of the year of tenure (2008) and must be enrolled in a full-time (at least 75 points) Commonwealth Supported Place. The student must be an Australian citizen or permanent resident.

The recipient will be chosen based on demonstrated disadvantage and academic merit. Particular regard will be given to financial need.

The Exner Engineering Award

The Exner Engineering Award is open to all students undertaking an undergraduate degree in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering who have completed 12 weeks of engineering-related vacation work.

Eligible students will be asked to submit a written application comprised of an application form, written report on the student's vacation work experiences, curriculum vitae and the student's most recent academic record and a covering letter.

Please ensure your application addresses the selection criteria.

Applications will be judged on the following criteria:

  • Quality of vacation work report
  • Demonstrated leadership skills
  • Teamwork

The value of the award in 2008 is $500.

ExxonMobil Awards for Excellence

ExxonMobil established the Awards for Excellence in 2005 in order to recognise and support outstanding achievements by students in the penultimate year of a Bachelor of Engineering. Three awards are available in 2008, valued at $3,500 each.  The awards are formally presented at the Melbourne Engineering Awards Night in May.  Those short-listed for the awards will be considered for the ExxonMobil Engineering Vacation Program.

Applications will be judged on the following selection criteria:

  • Academic excellence;
  • Involvement in extracurricular activities;
  • Demonstrated experience of working as a leader and as a member of a team.

Goldman Sachs Global Leaders Program

The Goldman Sachs Global Leaders Program identifies and prepares talented and accomplished students from around the world for service to society and to their future professions.

The University is now calling for nominations for 2007 to attend the Goldman Sachs Global Leaders Program. Students who are nominated by the University may then be invited to apply for the program by the organising body, the Institute of International Education.

Students must be in their second year of their first undergraduate degree in 2007 and show outstanding leadership skills and academic achievement.

If you would like to be nominated, please send:

  • the nomination form, completed by a lecturer or other appropriate person;
  • your resume; and
  • an essay of no more than 500 words. The essay should discuss your vision for the future, what you want to do to change the world and the values that underpin your life and the career you plan to pursue.

2008 Google Global Community Scholarship for the Grace Hopper Conference

The 2008 Google Global Community Scholarship helps students attend the Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing Conference at the Keystone Resort, Colorado on October 1-4,2008. Conference details can be found at www.gracehopper.org.

Each selected student will receive up to $2,500 USD for airfare, hotel, conference registration and other travel requirements. All applications must be submitted by June 15, 2008

Eligibility Requirements

Candidates must be:

  • Enrolled full-time in their undergraduate or graduate study in a university outside of the United States
  • In Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related technical field major
  • Maintaining a strong academic background with demonstrated leadership ability

Mijo Darveniza Engineering Scholarship (Goulburn Valley Water)

The aim of the scholarship is to: promote the water industry to tertiary level students; and support a full time student from the Goulburn Valley Region.

The Scholarship will consist of:

  • $3,500 cash component per year - payable in half yearly instalments
  • Christmas vacation employment for two consecutive years commencing in December 2007
  • Opportunity for employment by Goulburn Valley Water after the completion of your studies

Candidates must meet the following criteria:

  • Studying a full-time undergraduate engineering degree at a Victorian University
  • Major must be in a water related field
  • Entering the third year of study in 2008
  • Parental home must be located  in Goulburn Valley Water's Region
  • A strong desire to work in the water industry after Graduation

The Paterson Scholarship (2008)

The Paterson Scholarship to the value of $5,000 annually will be awarded for the normal period of the undergraduate engineering degree course. In 2008, one scholarship will be offered to an Australian citizen or Permanent Resident entering their first year of the Bachelor of Engineering in 2008.

The Selection Criteria are as follows:

  • Financial need - as determined by information provided by the applicant
  • Disadvantage - as defined by the University's Access Melbourne Scheme
  • Academic merit - as determined by the student's results in the final year of secondary school

Applications for the 2008 Paterson Scholarship will be accepted from Monday, 17 December 2007 until Monday, 10 March 2008. Please note that only submissions received from applicants enrolled in and commencing the Bachelor of Engineering in Semester 1 of 2008 will be considered. The application process for this scholarship is entirely separate from and independent to any application for admission and enrolment in courses of study at the University of Melbourne.

The 2008 Paterson Scholarship will be the second Paterson Scholarship awarded, following a generous endowment by Bob and Helen Paterson which will allow the Paterson Scholarships to be awarded in perpetuity.

The Rio Tinto Engineering Scholarship

One annual scholarships to the value of $8,000 to be awarded for up to three years plus an Honours year if applicable.

The award will be open to all full-time students who have completed the first year and are undertaking their second year of an Engineering degree (single or combined), majoring in chemical engineering.

Applicants will be short listed by representatives from Rio Tinto and an academic staff member of the Melbourne School of Engineering.

Students will be selected according to the following criteria:

  • Academic merit
  • Demonstrated interpersonal and communication skills
  • Proven initiative
  • Extra-curricular community activities
  • Interest in minerals and mineral processing activities

Rhodes Scholarship 2008

Do you aspire for postgraduate study at Oxford University?

If you have achieved outstanding academic success in a Bachelors Degree, preferably with Honours, and enjoy success in sports, involvement in community activities, have a desire to lead and develop your talents further - then you have the qualities of a Rhodes Scholar.

Successful candidates receive assistance with their travelling expenses to the United Kingdom and a personal allowance, or stipend, fixed by the Rhodes Trust.  The stipend for 2008 - 2009 will be no less than £820 (approx. AUD$ 2,040) per month.  In addition all fees are paid directly by the Trust.

Solander Scholarship Program for Science, Engineering & Medicine

Applications are now being received for the 2007 Solander Scholarships Program.

This program supports and widens international scientific exchange and provides a unique opportunity for researchers at the Honours, Masters, Doctoral, Post-doctoral and Research Fellow levels to benefit from the establishment of international contacts.

Both Melbourne and Lund universities will each offer up to eight travelling scholarships and one Solander Fellowship for 2007.

Melbourne University Travelling Scholarships are available to research students and the Fellowship to an emerging researcher from the faculties of Science, Medicine Dentistry and Health Sciences and Engineering.

The Society of Petroleum Engineers Prize (First Year)

One scholarship, to the value of $1,000 is available to students undertaking their first year of a Bachelor of Engineering, including those undertaking combined degrees.
