Research Leaders
Professor Jonathan Manton: Future Generation Professor
A Future Generation Professor is a distinguished position created by the Vice Chancellor targeted specifically at recruiting world-class researchers to lead the University in emerging and cross-disciplinary research areas and to act as a conduit for more intense collaboration across networks of academic departments, industry and other research institutions.
Manton is currently endeavouring to establish a Centre for Neural Engineering, which will span the Faculties of Science, Engineering and Medicine.
Professor David Solomon: a Fellow of the Royal
Society (FRS)
Professor David Solomon is a polymer scientist who invented the world's first plastic banknote, which is now used in over 22 countries. His next big project is to use the same technology to save billions of litres of water being lost from catchment areas because of evaporation.
Professor Solomon is one of an elite group of Australian scientists admitted to the Royal Society, whose 1300 members include Isaac Newton, Albert Einstein and Stephen Hawking.
Professor Frank Caruso: Federation Fellow
& international expert in nanostructures
Professor Frank Caruso heads a team of more than 30 staff in the Nanostructured Interfaces and Materials research group working on a new generation of drug delivery systems to significantly improve the way in which healthcare is provided to patients with cancer, AIDS and other diseases for which current treatment is inadequate.
Professor Caruso is involved in collaborations with researchers at Australia’s leading biomedical institutes, including the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research, Austin Hospital, Baker Heart Medical Institute and the Bionic Ear Institute. Professor Caruso is also involved in a project on vaccine delivery, in collaboration with the University’s Department of Immunology and Microbiology.
Laureate Professor Rod Tucker: one of the 250
most cited researchers worldwide in the field of Engineering
in the past 20 years
Rod Tucker is an Australian Research Council (ARC) Federation Fellow and a Laureate Professor He is Research Director at the ARC Special Research Centre for Ultra-Broadband Information Networks (CUBIN).
Professor David Boger: elected a Fellow of the Royal Society; winner of the Prime Minister's
Science Prize; winner of the 2003 Clunies Ross National Science
& Technology Award
He has worked to apply science and technology to solve community problems. He is widely recognised for his discovery of a class of elastic fluids now known as 'Boger Fluids'.
