Graduate Research Scholarships
The Melbourne School of Engineering gratefully acknowledges the donors whose generosity has made the following scholarships possible.
Interdisciplinary PhD Scholarship program
The University has recently begun encouraging interdisciplinary research, which can be one of the most productive and inspiring pursuits leading to new knowledge. The Interdisciplinary PhD Scholarship program is open to both domestic and international students to undertake a PhD at the University of Melbourne, starting in 2013. Successful applicants will undertake an interdisciplinary PhD project at the University of Melbourne, jointly supervised by academics from multiple disciplines. The scholarship provides fee remission and an annual stipend of $23,728.
Successful domestic students will receive an Australian Postgraduate Award and international students will receive a Melbourne International Research Scholarship.
Interdisciplinary projects that are available are listed on the MMI website. Interested applicants should submit an expression of interest as per the guideline available on MMI website.
Applicants must meet the following academic requirements:
- Completion of tertiary studies that are at least equivalent to a four-year honours degree at an Australian university
- A first-class Honours degree or GPA above 3.6 or equivalent
- Completion of a research project/component as part of their tertiary studies that accounts for at least 25% of their year's work at 4th year or Masters level.

Victoria India Doctoral Scholarships
Ten PhD scholarships will be offered by the Victorian Government via the Australia India Institute to Indian citizens accepted into a doctoral programme at a participating Victorian University to commence in 2012.
The Scholarships are worth AUD$90,000 and offer a full waiver of tuition fees.
Applications for 2012 have closed.
To be eligible for consideration, applicants must apply for the University of Melbourne PhD program via the combined candidature and scholarship application form, available from Future Students: Applications: Graduate Research Degrees.

CEET Top-Up Scholarship Applications
Alcatel-Lucent’s research arm, Bell Labs, in collaboration with the Victorian State Government and the University of Melbourne have established the Centre for Energy-Efficient Telecommunications (CEET). The facility is the first of its kind in Australia and will undertake research focused on making all elements of telecommunications infrastructure energy efficient.
Applications are now open for PhD Top-Up Scholarships with CEET. CEET Top-Up Scholarships are at a level of $5,000 p.a., and are renewable for the duration of the primary scholarship and subject to an annual review of research progress. CEET will provide a limited number of Top-Up Scholarships for graduate students undertaking research within CEET. Successful applicants will focus on research into energy-efficient telecommunications that are part of the CEET research program.

Gilbert Rigg Scholarship
The Melbourne School of Engineering and the Faculty of Science have three PhD scholarships available for high achieving students to undertake research in either Mining or Metallurgy. The scholarships will provide a stipend of up to $25,000 (tax free) per annum and there is funding available for up to 3.5 years.
In order to meet the admission criteria, applicants should have a strong background in Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Chemistry, Engineering, Earth Sciences or equivalent with honours H2A or better.

Elizabeth and Vernon Puzey Graduate Research Scholarships
Applications are invited for the Elizabeth and Vernon Puzey Graduate Research Scholarships, which honour the late Elizabeth and Vernon Puzey of Toorak. The scholarships aim to “retain the services of well qualified citizens of Australia from leaving Australia”.
Each scholarship is valued at $27,500 p.a. and is available to a graduate research student for up to 3.5 years, with benefits consistent with an APA Scholarship.
Three scholarships are available, one each in the Faculty of Science, the Melbourne School of Engineering and the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry & Health Sciences. A fourth scholarship may be made available to foster cross-disciplinary research across any combination of the Faculty of Science, the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry & Health Sciences and the Melbourne School of Engineering.
Eligibility
You must be an Australian citizen currently residing in Australia. Applicants will be assessed based on their academic performance, with a high standard expected.
Awarding of the scholarship will be subject to an offer of a place in a relevant graduate research program and the availability of appropriate supervisors.

MSE Research Training Conference Assistance Scheme
The Melbourne School of Engineering provides competitive travel grants to assist students to present a refereed paper at a conference.

Solander Scholarship Program for Science, Engineering & Medicine
This program supports and widens international scientific exchange and provides a unique opportunity for researchers at the Honours, Masters, Doctoral, Post-doctoral and Research Fellow levels to benefit from the establishment of international contacts.
Melbourne University Travelling Scholarships are available to research students and the Fellowship to an emerging researcher from the faculties of Science, Medicine Dentistry and Health Sciences and Engineering.

Australian Building Codes Board (ABCB) Research Scholarship
This scholarship has been established to encourage undergraduate and postgraduate research in the field of building regulation in Australia. The scholarship is available for students undertaking study in the field of Built Environment or Engineering at an Australian educational institution. Applicants may be studying full-time, part-time or externally and there are no residency/citizenship requirements.
The research must form a component of a program/course at an educational institution (such as a research project, thesis or dissertation). Selection is based on the submission of a research proposal outlining the research objective, hypothesis and research method. Each applicant will be required to complete and submit an Australian Building Codes Board Scholarship Application Form together with your resume and academic transcript to date. There is no closing date for applications.
The scholarship is valued at $5,000 for one year.

These scholarships are offered to female students who are enrolled at Victorian universities, or at the Victorian campuses of the Australian Catholic University. Applicants are asked to demonstrate that they are or have been experiencing disadvantage in the pursuit of their studies.

Australasian Hydrographic Society Education Award
Each year the Australasian Hydrographic Society offers an Education Award of $2,500 AUD. The award is open to students studying, or proposing to study, within a broad range of maritime, surveying and engineering disciplines including:

The General Sir John Monash Awards
These awards are Australia’s prestigious equivalent to the Rhodes scholarship and the American Fulbright program. The award offers up to $150,000 over three years to support graduate studies (PhD, DPhil or professional Masters Degree) at leading overseas universities.
Eight General Sir John Monash Awards are made each year to Australian citizens judged to have outstanding academic achievement, community consciousness and service and leadership potential in their field and the community. There is no restriction on age or field of study but Award winners are expected to make a significant contribution to the future development of Australia.

Amelia Earhart Fellowships for Women
The Fellowships memorialize famed air pioneer and Zontian, Amelia Earhart, who disappeared over the Pacific in 1937. By remembering Amelia Earhart through this fellowship, Zonta International encourages and supports women to expand their horizons by pursuing aerospace-related sciences and aerospace engineering. There have been 1,333 Amelia Earhart Fellowships totaling over US $7.5 million awarded to 929 fellows worldwide.

Scovell Gardner Family Fund
The Scovell Gardner Family Fund has provided awards for the purpose of assisting Indigenous Australian students, enrolled at the University of Melbourne in research higher degrees, to complete their studies.
The fund may also be used for the following:
- bursary support for students in financial need during their studies, particularly towards the end of their degrees
- support for travel to conferences and fieldwork associated with their studies.
Applicants should have explored alternative options for support prior to application.
