ARC Centre of Excellence - Design in Light Metals
Associate Professor Kenong Xia is part of the successful ARC Centre of Excellence - Design in Light Metals - formed in June 2005.
The Centre of Excellence (CoE) comprises 6 Australian universities (Monash – lead institution, Queensland, Deakin, New South Wales, Sydney and Melbourne), and will receive a total of over $21m over the next 5 years.
The CoE will coordinate internationally competitive research strengths to establish a strategic fundamental research platform for expansion of the light metals industry. It will embrace a novel ‘design-directed’ approach to the systematic identification of strategic research initiatives that will maximise the competitiveness of light alloys and light metal hybrid materials based on aluminium, magnesium and titanium.
The Department of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering is leading one of the major projects aimed at novel processing and characterisation of nanostructured light alloys with mechanical properties significantly superior to those of existing alloys.
