Student Projects

We are committed to providing students with the opportunity to work with organisations on real-world projects that form part of our curriculum.

Contribute to our curriculum and the student experience by participating in a student project. Student projects are assessed by the Melbourne School of Engineering and do not require payment from participating organisations. All our departments offer student projects.

A selection of projects are exhibited at the School’s Endeavour Design Expo, a student-managed venture between the Departments of Mechanical, Electrical & Electronic, Computing and Information Systems, and Infrastructure Engineering.

FAQs for host organisations

Do I need to pay the student?

No, since the projects form part of the student’s assessment and are part of the curriculum.

How does the assessment work?

Projects are assessed by Melbourne School of Engineering.

When do the projects take place?

This depends on the subject for which the project is assessed. It could be Semester 1, Semester 2 or year long.

What is the time commitment?

This depends on the weighting of the assessment in a particular subject. If the project forms the main piece of subject assessment, students should spend the equivalent of at least 1.25 days per week working on the project.

Who owns the IP?

The Standard Agreement between the host organisation and the University divests IP generated by the students to the Host Organisation.

Do the students work at our organisation or on campus?

Either. This depends on what works best for a given project.

What is the difference between ‘vacation work’, ‘internships’ and ‘student projects’?

The terms ‘work experience’, ‘internships’ and ‘student projects’ are used in different ways by different people. For Melbourne School of Engineering, the single significant factor determining the nature of their relationship with the host organisation is whether the work the student does is subject to assessment in their degree

Vacation work and internships

Vacation work and internships are not assessed by the Melbourne School of Engineering. The terms of work are agreed to by the host organisation and student, and must comply with the Fair Work Act 2009. Vacation work and internships must be paid, with the exception of voluntary work for not-for profit agencies. Vacation work and internships can be advertised through Careers & Employment.

Student projects

Student Projects are subjects that form part of a student’s assessment. Organisations that participate in a student project are regarded as contributing to the School’s curriculum and are therefore not required to offer payment to the student. Student projects are assessed by Melbourne School of Engineering and a standard agreement between the host organisation and University must be used. This Agreement divests IP generated by the students to the host organisation, and covers student insurance and other matters.
