Melbourne School of Engineering

Undergraduate courses

Excellence in teaching and research combine to make the Melbourne School of Engineering at the University of Melbourne a world leader in engineering education.

From 2008, the University will be introducing an exciting new approach to higher education known as the Melbourne Model. This means that there will be a variety of pathways to a career in Engineering offering you the flexibility to choose a course that is right for you.

How to study Engineering

There are two ways students can embark on gaining engineering qualifications at the University of Melbourne:

  • the four-year Bachelor or Engineering or
  • a three-year undergraduate degree in Biomedicine, Environments, Commerce or Science followed by a two-year professional Master of Engineering

One of the benefits of the new undergraduate degrees is that Melbourne has evolved the program to allow students to keep their options open.

A student can select from one of the Melbourne Model undergraduate degrees which have engineering pathways ensuring exposure to more of the best on offer at the University of Melbourne.

For example, students who would have previously considered doing a double degree in Commerce and Engineering, can now apply to do a Bachelor of Commerce, enrolling in a specified sequence of Engineering subjects leading to the professional Master of Engineering. These students will graduate twice in five years with qualifications a cut above the standard double degree.

Similarly students with an interest in Science and Engineering will now be able to enrol in a Bachelor of Science followed by a Master of Engineering.
