University e-mail accounts

All students of the University are offered a free Email account, subject to the University's conditions of use. The University will use Email to contact you about administrative matters and you will use Email to communicate with your lecturers and fellow students. Student Email accounts are on a central mail server.

Student Administration and academic staff use Email to communicate with students. Class lists have been established so that lecturers and tutors can send Email to all students enrolled in a particular course or subject. It is important that you activate your Email account on this server, and check it regularly.

The first step is to activate your account. Once the account has been activated, you can use Email by connecting to the mail server with the University's Webmail interface. You can also use Email with a POP Email package, such as Eudora. This is not recommended in a shared environment such as a computer laboratory, but is appropriate if you have your own computer.

Before you activate your account

Before you activate your account you should read and understand the Rules relating to the use of University Computing and Network Resources. The relevant University Rules and Regulations (Regulation 8.1.R7) can be found here

Creating accounts or changing passwords for your email or computer accounts

Activation of email and computers accounts as well as password changes for these accounts can be accomplished on the web here

You will need the following:
Student Number
Full Name
Date of Birth
Postcode of your permanent address*
Your library barcode number (which is the barcode on your student card)

*Please make sure the University has your correct permanent and term addresses. You can check and change the addresses on-line.

If you experience problems when trying to do this, please seek help from staff at the Student IT Help Desk, Ground Floor, Centre for the Study of Higher Education Building, 161 Monash Rd.

Forwarding of e-mail

Your ECR computer user account automatically gives you an email address in addition to your University account. You may also have user accounts in your respective departments, to access their laboratories, and still more accounts in other faculties if you are enrolled in a combined degree program. You should forward all your email from the various University accounts to one email address that you can check on a regular basis.
