Subject selectionYou enter your course plan on the Internet, through the Student Information System (known as the SIS). Step 1: Getting StartedBefore you can begin Subject Selection on the SIS, you will need to have opened a central University e-mail account. The SIS relies heavily on e-mail to communicate the status of your plan. If you don't have an account, you can create one from the SIS Subject Selection system. You will not be able to proceed until you have an e-mail account. To begin Subject Selection - go to: sis.unimelb.edu.au From the SIS, select the "Subject Selection" option under the 'Hot' icon. You'll need to enter your Student ID Number and PIN to start the course planning module. (Every student has a PIN - if you don't know your PIN, read the SIS help page.) Note: If you try to enter your course plan on the Internet outside of the allowed time period - you will get the following message: "Web based Subject Selection is not available for students in your course. Please see your Faculty office for Subject Selection details." using SIS on campus There are many computer labs on campus with access to the SIS and the Internet. Step 2: Reading On-Line InformationThe first page of the Subject Selection module contains links to important course planning information:
Make sure that you've read this information carefully. If you are at all uncertain about your course plan, speak to a course adviser before you enter your plan. Once you're ready to proceed, enter your student ID number and PIN and press the button marked 'Continue'.
Step 3: Entering Your PlanThe next page you see contains the following sections: Your course details: Course name If you need to refer to the course regulations, click on the name of your course and a new window will open up at the appropriate section of the handbook. To return to your plan, close the handbook window. Expected Course Completion Date This date indicates when you are expected to complete your degree. If you think that the date is incorrect, click on the pulldown menu and drag down to select the appropriate date. Your current plan This section shows the subjects already included in your plan. If you haven't entered a plan yet, this section will be empty. If you're enrolled in a course with some fixed subjects, your fixed subjects will be shown in this section. Subject Details The full subject details will be displayed for each subject in your current plan. If you don't understand the terms used in this section, click on the column headings for an explanation. To check the Handbook entry for a subject, click on the subject name and a new window will open up at the appropriate section of the handbook. To return to your plan, close the handbook window. Selecting a subject option If a subject is offered at more than one year level - or taught in more than one semester - the options will be displayed in a pull-down menu. Click on the pull-down menu and drag down to select your preferred option. If you make changes to the subject options, make sure you use the 'update plan' button at the bottom of the page before you lodge your plan. Deleting a subject from your current plan On the far right of each subject entry there is a checkbox - mark this box if you want to delete a subject from your current plan. If you delete a subject from your current plan, make sure you use the 'check these revisions to my plan' button before you lodge your plan. Warnings about your current plan This section will display any warnings about the subjects in your current plan - including warnings about workload, subject prerequisites, quota subjects, etc. Please read these warnings carefully and make any necessary changes before you lodge your plan. Additional subjects You can add subjects to your plan by entering six-digit subject codes in this section, then clicking the 'update plan' button at the bottom of the page. The screen will be updated and the additional subjects will be displayed in your current plan. 'Check these revisions to my plan' Button If you've made any changes to the subject details in your current plan, or you've added additional subjects, it's important to click this button before you lodge your plan. This will update your current plan as well as any warnings related to your current plan. 'Clear Plan' Button If you make a mistake, click this button to clear the page and start again. 'Submit' Button Once you've updated your plan to check any changes, enter your PIN to continue. Read through all the warning messages then click this button to submit your plan to the School Office.
Step 4: Confirmation of your PlanAfter you submit your plan, a copy of your new plan, the warnings and receipt number will be displayed on screen. The receipt number is the only way you can be sure that you lodged your plan. What happens next? Once you've entered your plan, it will be stored and loaded onto the Student Records Database overnight. The next day, you will receive an e-mail confirming that your plan was lodged successfully, and whether there were any problems. A report will also be sent to your School Office and a staff member may contact you to discuss any problems. However, it's important to remember that you are responsible for checking that your plan meets course and subject requirements. The School Office has no obligation to contact you if your plan does not satisfy the basic course and subject requirements. Not properly understanding course and subject requirements does not constitute grounds for any form of special consideration or special assessment. You can avoid problems with your course plan by carefully reading these instructions and the course and subject details in the Undergraduate Handbook. Make sure you read any warnings displayed by the SIS carefully. If you are at all in doubt about your plan, make sure you consult a faculty course adviser. HELP!!
