Dean's Welcome
Welcome to the Melbourne School of Engineering at the University of Melbourne. Engineering is a rewarding discipline with excellent career prospects. Engineers create solutions and innovations that make a real difference to our world. The Melbourne School of Engineering has an international reputation for its research, teaching, academic staff and graduates. The School boasts 14 Fellows of the Australian Academy of Technological Science and Engineering, 7 Fellows of the Australian Academy of Science, 4 Federation Fellows, 2 Fellows of the Royal Society, 2 Laureate Professors and 2 Australian Prime Minister’s Prize winners. In 2007 our name changed from the Faculty of Engineering to the Melbourne School of Engineering to reflect changes to the model of education at the University, which will see engineering undergraduate degrees and professional graduate degrees taught together for the first time. Today we are the first school in Australia to offer a five-year accredited engineering program in line with the growing trend at top international engineering schools. The University will now accept students into a five-year program structured as a three-year undergraduate degree with an engineering major or sequence, followed by a two-year Master of Engineering. The new Melbourne Model enables students to develop their technical expertise and gain broader skills and experience outside of engineering. This will make our graduates better equipped to contribute to the profession and our community. The School will start to deliver the professional Masters degrees from 2010. The new suite of Master of Engineering programs, available in 11 streams, will be fully implemented in 2011. It is a great time to be thinking about engineering studies. It is becoming very clear that “steady as she goes” is not a scenario that our planet can endure for much longer. Engineers must show the way in which we can use and reuse the available energy, water and natural resources more generally and much more efficiently. Combined with a generally accepted skill shortage in engineering worldwide and in particular here in Australia, this should be great encouragement to study engineering with some of the brightest and best. Indeed, our School is recognised for excellence in engineering and is ranked 21st in the world for Technology by The Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2007. Our research activities are focussed to benefit society in areas of global importance – bioengineering, information and communications, materials and sustainability. Our researchers collaborate with leading national and international industry partners. We consistently set high standards with our research, and in many of our projects, we achieve world firsts. With great career opportunities and a world of choice offered through the Melbourne Model, there has never been a better time to study engineering at the University of Melbourne. Welcome!
