PhD In Engineering
What is the PhD?
The degree of Doctor of Philosophy - Engineering (PhD) involves independent and sustained research on a particular topic conducted under academic supervision. The research is expected to make a significant new contribution to the discipline. Students produce an 80,000-word thesis, which is externally examined.
Each candidate has a research supervisor who, in consultation with the candidate, arranges the course of supervised research designed to suit the individual requirements and interests of the candidate. A candidate may also be required to supplement the research program by enrolment in recommended lectures if these are considered a necessary adjunct to the course.
Initial admission to PhD candidature is to probationary candidature. After 12 months full-time probationary candidature (or 24 months part-time), candidates are eligible for admission to confirmed candidature.
Confirmed candidature is normally for a (further) period of two years full-time (four years part-time), after which it is possible normally to apply for no more than two extensions of six months.
