Master of Engineering (Structural)
Structural engineers apply mathematical and scientific principles to the design, development and evaluation of materials and systems used in building load-bearing structures like roads, buildings, rail lines, dams and offshore platforms.
Students in this specialisation learn from high quality researchers recognised internationally for their expertise high-rise structures, and earthquake and blast resistant technologies. Design seminars, field work and workshops provide students with opportunities to work with industry professionals in their final year.
Career opportunities exist in a variety of roles related to the design of structures, their longevity, and their ability to withstand extremes such as earthquake, high winds, blast or fire.
Entry Requirements
Admission to the Master of Engineering requires at least 65% GPA in the final two years of undergraduate study.
Pathways to the Master of Engineering (Structural) include:
University of Melbourne New Generation undergraduate degrees in the following:
- Bachelor of Science (Civil Systems) (3 years) followed by the Master of Engineering (Structural) (2 years, points)
- Bachelor of Environments (Civil Systems) (3 years) followed by the Master of Engineering (Structural) (2 years, points)
- Bachelor of Commerce (with Engineering breadth sequence in Civil Systems) followed by the Master of Engineering (Structural) (2 years, points)
Any other bachelor degree:
Students graduating from any (minimum 3-year) degree program who have completed the equivalent of 25 points of first-year mathematics (specifically Calculus 2 and Linear Algebra or equivalent) and 25 points of science (any) may be admitted to the point (3-year) Master of Engineering (Structural).
