150th Gala Dinner

Friday 28th October, 2011

The centrepiece of our 150th celebrations was the 150th Gala Dinner. Set in the majestic surrounds of NGV's Great Hall, below the superbly crafted kaleidoscopic glass ceiling by Leonard French, the 150th Gala Dinner was a black-tie event, celebrating all of the milestones that made the Melbourne School of Engineering what it is today: #1 in Australia for Engineering Education.

Photos from the Engineering Gala Dinner can be found at http://www.eng.unimelb.edu.au/alumni/gallery/gala-dinner/. A series of videos showcasing the history of Engineering at the University of Melbourne were produced for the celebrations - please visit http://www.eng.unimelb.edu.au/about/history/.

Endeavour – Design Expo & Industry Night

Thursday 27th October, 2011

Endeavour 2011 Design Expo was held in Wilson Hall and its surroundings on the Parkville Campus, at the University of Melbourne. Featuring a broad range of innovative engineering projects, the event showcased some of the achievements of final year Melbourne School of Engineering students. Over 100 projects were on display from the departments of Mechanical, Electrical & Electronic, Computer Science & Software, and Infrastructure Engineering.

The Endeavour Industry Night provided an opportunity for professional representatives to enjoy the Endeavour Design Expo and interact with the project students in a formal yet festive atmosphere. With food, drinks and music, the event is a highlight of the School's calendar and provides a fantastic networking opportunity for students, industry members and university academics. Endeavour Industry Night allows industry members to view projects and interact one on one with our graduating class. A short awards ceremony is held to recognize the best projects on display, the winners of which are chosen by both industry members and university academics.

The Marvels of Ancient Engineering: Tutankhamun Public Lectures

Tuesday September 13th, 6.30 pm

Got a sneaking suspicion that the pyramids of Egypt were actually built by aliens? Like to know what King Tut and Lance Armstrong have in common? Engineers are the people who design, build and manage the constructed and technological world in which we live. In this presentation the audience was taken back in time to look at some of the feats of ancient engineers and explore the intersection between modern and ancient engineering marvels. Jamie Evans and Andrew Ooi are professors in the Melbourne School of Engineering at the University of Melbourne where Professor Evans specialises in Electrical and Electronic Engineering and Professor Ooi, Mechanical Engineering. They share a passion for engineering and its role in shaping our world.

Eng v Law Great Debate

Thursday 1st September 2011 – 6pm for 6.30pm, A1 Lecture Theatre, Old Engineering

The historic rivalry between the engineering and law students, past and present, was revived as part of Engineering's 150th Celebrations. After a win each to Engineering and to Law in 2010, alumni adjudicators decided the tiebreaker as student teams debated the big issue: "Lawyers or Engineers: Who creates the future?" The Engineers were the victors this year - an online photos gallery of the event is at http://www.eng.unimelb.edu.au/alumni/gallery/debate/.

Amazing Spaghetti Machine Contest

Final Judging 26th & 27th of July, 2011

Organised by the Melbourne School of Engineering, The Amazing Spaghetti Machine Contest is an annual competition for school students in Year 10 where knowledge and skills in maths, science, engineering and project management are put to the test in the creation of a 'spaghetti machine' - the Italian term for an overly complex machine or device that is used to perform a relatively simple task. Take a look at an example (by American inventor and cartoonist Rube Goldberg) on our official Spaghetti Machine Contest page, or watch the video of a Rube Goldberg machine developed by Honda.

To see how it all went on the day check out this video.

For more information please email spaghettimachine-eng@eng.unimelb.edu.au.

Reunion Program

The Melbourne School of Engineering surveyed engineering alumni late in 2010 and developed a 2011 Reunion Program based on levels with interest within engineering alumni cohorts. We are proud to announce the following reunions in 2011:

For more information please visit Alumni Events and Reunions.

There was a lot of interest in the Reunion Program for 2011 and unfortunately we were not able to accommodate for everyone. Alumni who do not have a reunion opportunity provided within this program are encouraged to consider hosting or coordinating a reunion table at the 150th Gala Dinner on Friday, 28th October 2011 (see above).

For more information please contact Elise Everest, the 150th Project Manager on +61 3 9035 3460.
